speaking in public is realy not as easy much as it isn't that difficult. its a great way of enhancing one's status as an expert.
However, Becoming a good public speaker is an art not a science, its non instinctive, it requires more than just having the confidence to stand your audience.
Here are some few tips that can make you a better speaker in events.
1. Be a good listener:
Its interesting to know that we have one mouth and two ears so we could listen twice as much as we speak. listening to seasoned speakers how they pronounce words, how they gesticulate will help you improve in your cravens to be a good speaker.
2. Memorize the concept not the content:
Trying to memorize the content word-for-word may be tempting, and you may think its the best way to make a flawless speach. But the truth is you'll end up creating problems for yourself. Do well to know the concept, the main points and build on it.
3. Do research on the subject:
One big secret to making an awesome speech is by knowing or having good idea on the subject matter. This can be achieved by doing adequate research on the topic. Read articles, journals and any material that can equip you with information on the subject you want to talk about.
4. Flip your mindset to ease your nerves:
Even the most seasoned speakers can get nervous prior
to presenting. The most effective way to take the
pressure off of you is to change your mindset and think
about your audience rather than yourself or the
speech. Remember that you are there to provide them
with valuable information and if the audience members
leave with one or two new items, reminders or a new
perspective, you have made it worth their
while. Focusing on being helpful or in service of the
audience, instead of on yourself, can help you to relax.
5. Practice often:
Practice they say begets perfection. It is the dream of every one to be a great speaker but the truth is that dream can only be realised if one practice well. speak among your pals, at get-togethers and little events. Do well to reduce and eliminate the em em, um um and other stuttering sound as well.
Learn also to be interactive as you plan your speech, think about where you can involve the audience and what devices you can use to involve them in the presentation so that you are talking with them, not just to them.
6. Perception: Stop trying to be a great speaker.
People want to listen to someone who is interesting, relaxed,
and comfortable. Its kind of ironic and funny how trying not to be a great speaker can actually make you a great speaker. In the routine conversations we have every
day, we have no problem being ourselves. Yet too often, when we stand up to give a speech, something changes. We focus on the “public” at the expense of the “speaking.” To become an effective public speaker, you must do just the opposite: focus on the speaking and let go of the “public.” Think of it as a conversation between you and the audience. If you can carry on a relaxed conversation with one or two people, you can give a great speech. Whether your audience consists of two people or two thousand and whether you’re talking about the latest medical breakthrough or what you did today at work, be yourself; talk directly to people and make a connection with them.
